Short answer: A Gramin Dak Sevak (GDS) moves up through exams held only for India Post staff. After 3 years as GDS you can write the exam for MTS. After 5 years, with 10th pass, you can write the exam for Postman / Mail Guard. From MTS or Postman you then write the LDCE for Postal Assistant / Sorting Assistant (PA/SA).
The rules below are taken from India Post's own 2025 and 2026 exam notices and recruitment rules. Each circle issues its own notice every year, so always read your circle's notice before you apply. The sources are at the end.

What does the ladder look like?
| Step | Post | Who can write the exam | Exam |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Gramin Dak Sevak (GDS) | Entry post | No departmental exam needed |
| 2 | Multi-Tasking Staff (MTS), Level 1 | GDS with 3 years of regular engagement. No upper age limit, no minimum education. | Competitive Examination (CE): Paper I only |
| 3 | Postman / Mail Guard, Level 3 (₹21,700–69,100) | GDS with 5 years, 10th pass, within 50 years of age. Or MTS with 3 years in MTS (or 5 years counting GDS service). | Paper I, II, III (local language) + Paper IV typing test (DEST) |
| 4 | Postal Assistant / Sorting Assistant | Postman, Mail Guard and MTS staff with the service shown below | LDCE for PA/SA + typing test (DEST) |
Service is counted as on 1 January of the vacancy year. For the 2026 exams, that date was 1 January 2026.
How does a GDS become MTS?
You need 3 years of regular engagement as GDS. The 2026 notice says there is no upper age limit and no minimum educational qualification for this exam.
For MTS, only Paper I counts for the merit list. You don't need the local language paper (Paper III) if you want MTS only.
How does a GDS become Postman or Mail Guard?
The 2026 notices list four conditions:
- 10th pass from a recognised Board.
- 5 years of regular engagement as GDS.
- Within 50 years of age as on 1 January (relaxed for some categories).
- Knowledge of computers and of the local language of the circle.
For Postman there is a fifth rule: a two-wheeler or light motor vehicle licence. You can still be appointed without one. But your yearly pay increment is held back until you show a licence, for up to 5 years. Persons with benchmark disabilities are exempt.
The written papers (I, II and III) are held in one sitting. Your merit for Postman/Mail Guard is the total of Paper I and Paper II. Paper III (local language) and Paper IV (typing test) only need a pass.
How does an MTS become Postman?
Through the Limited Departmental Competitive Examination (LDCE). The recruitment rules allow MTS staff (Level 1) with:
- 3 years of regular service as MTS, or
- 5 years of total regular service, counting the years served regularly as GDS.
GDS and MTS candidates often write on the same day. In Andhra Pradesh Circle, the common 2025 exam for MTS/GDS to Postman, Mail Guard and MTS was held on 31 August 2025, with the typing test on 21 September 2025.
Who can write the PA/SA exam (LDCE)?
The 2026 PA/SA notice, based on the PA & SA Recruitment Rules 2022, has two groups:
| Group | Who | Service needed |
|---|---|---|
| A | Level 3 staff (e.g. Postman, Mail Guard) | 3 years in that post, or 5 years combined in Levels 1–3 |
| A | Level 2 staff | 5 years, including Level 1 service |
| A | Level 1 staff (e.g. MTS) | 5 years in that post |
| B | Level 1–3 staff counting GDS years | 8 years in total, including regular GDS service (5 years if the GDS service was on or before 17.06.2022) |
Group B is considered only if there are not enough Group A candidates for the vacancies. Since 29 May 2024, the PA/SA exam no longer has a local language paper.
What is the typing test (DEST)?
DEST means Data Entry Skill Test. It is 15 minutes, on a computer, in English, for 25 marks. It is held on a separate day, after the written papers.
| Exam | Text to type | Pass mark |
|---|---|---|
| GDS/MTS to Postman / Mail Guard | 600 key depressions (±5%) | 60% General and OBC/EWS; 50% SC/ST and PwD |
| PA/SA | 800 key depressions (±5%) as per the 2022 letter | 60% General and OBC/EWS; 50% SC/ST and PwD |
The Postman row is from the 2026 notices. For PA/SA, the 2026 notice points to a later Directorate letter (19.12.2022) that we could not get a copy of, so check the DEST rule in your own circle's notice.
For Postman/Mail Guard, only candidates who pass Papers I to III are called for the typing test. You can practise with India Post's own tool. See our DEST practice tool guide.
What does "LGO exam" mean?
Students and coaching centres often call these exams "LGO exams", short for Lower Grade Officials. The official notices don't use that word. They say CE (Competitive Examination, for GDS) and LDCE (Limited Departmental Competitive Examination, for regular staff).
When are these exams held?
Every year, for that year's vacancies (1 January to 31 December). In 2026:
- PA/SA LDCE: notice 11 May 2026, exam 21 June 2026 (Odisha Circle notice).
- GDS to Postman, Mail Guard and MTS: notice 1 June 2026, exam 12 July 2026, 10:00 AM in all circles (North East Circle notice). See the 12 July 2026 answer key.
Applications go through your Divisional office, not online. Watch your division's notice board.
