1.1 Meaning and definition
DIGIPIN means Digital Postal Index Number. It is an open-source nationwide geo-coded location referencing grid developed by the Department of Posts, Ministry of Communications, in collaboration with IIT Hyderabad and the National Remote Sensing Centre (NRSC), ISRO. It encodes latitude and longitude into a ten-character alphanumeric geographical reference.
A full DIGIPIN refers to a small geographical cell, approximately 4 m × 4 m. It is an additional attribute to conventional addresses, not a substitute for the recipient’s name or complete postal address.
1.2 Objectives
- Standardized, interoperable geographical location referencing throughout India.
- Improve precision in delivery, navigation, logistics and emergency response.
- Support public and private service delivery and the Address as a Service (AaaS) concept.
- Enable an online and offline implementable geographic addressing layer.
- Support a broader Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI) for address information.
1.3 Milestones and key organizations

Exam tip: Do not confuse DIGIPIN (location grid) with the six-digit postal PIN Code (postal area identifier).
2. Why DIGIPIN was introduced
Conventional Indian addresses vary by region and frequently use house numbers, street names, villages, administrative units and landmarks. Such details may be ambiguous, differently spelled, changed or absent in rural or remote places.
2.1 Problems of traditional addressing
- Non-standard formats: same location expressed in multiple ways.
- Rural limitations: missing door numbers or named streets.
- Dependence on landmarks: landmarks can move or disappear.
- Language variation: inconsistent transliteration and spellings.
- PIN Code precision: a single PIN Code ordinarily covers a broad postal area.
- Last-mile delivery: ambiguity creates extra searches and delays.
- Emergency response: unstructured addresses complicate locating an incident.
2.2 Proposed improvement
A code based on coordinates provides a stable point-of-reference for a small geographic grid. Postal address details and DIGIPIN may be used together: the address identifies the addressee, while the DIGIPIN helps identify the location.
3. Technical structure and architecture
3.1 Sixteen allowed characters
2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 · C F J K L M P T
The approved alphabet consists of 8 digits and 8 letters. Each level adds one character to the final ten-character reference.
3.2 Geographic bounding box
| Parameter | Extent |
|---|---|
| Minimum / maximum latitude | 2.5° N / 38.5° N |
| Minimum / maximum longitude | 63.5° E / 99.5° E |
| Latitude and longitude span | 36° each |
| Coordinate Reference System | EPSG:4326 |
| Geodetic datum | WGS84 |
3.3 Official 4 × 4 labelling grid
North is at the top; east is to the right. The same labelling arrangement is applied through all ten levels. Symbols spiral outwards anticlockwise.
3.4 Levels and approximate grid widths (at equator)
| Level / prefix length | Approximate width |
|---|---|
| 1 | 1,000 km |
| 2 | 250 km |
| 3 | 62.5 km |
| 4 | 15.6 km |
| 5 | 3.9 km |
| 6 | 1 km |
| 7 | 250 m |
| 8 | 60 m |
| 9 | 15 m |
| 10 | 3.8 m |
Important: level 6 represents approximately a 1 km cell; level 10 identifies the full ≈4 m cell. Distances are approximate and geographical dimensions vary with latitude.
4. DIGIPIN generation and decoding: step by step
4.1 Official Dak Bhawan example
Location: Dak Bhawan, New Delhi
Latitude: 28.622788° N
Longitude: 77.213033° E
| Level | Chosen symbol | Accumulated prefix |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | 3 | 3 |
| 2 | 9 | 39 |
| 3 | J | 39J |
| 4 | 4 | 39J4 |
| 5 | 9 | 39J49 |
| 6 | L | 39J49L |
| 7 | L | 39J49LL |
| 8 | 8 | 39J49LL8 |
| 9 | T | 39J49LL8T |
| 10 | 4 | 39J49LL8T4 |
The March 2025 source visually spaces the example as “39J 49L L8T4”; the unspaced ten-character value is displayed above.
4.2 Reverse decoding
Encoding: latitude + longitude → DIGIPIN.
Decoding: DIGIPIN → coordinates of the corresponding grid cell. A decoded centre point is not necessarily the exact originally entered coordinate.
4.3 Boundary rules
| Coordinate lies on | Selected cell |
|---|---|
| Vertical internal grid line | Right / eastward cell |
| Horizontal internal grid line | Upper / northward cell |
| Grid-line intersection | Top-right / north-east cell |
| Northernmost boundary | Lower / southward cell |
| Easternmost boundary | Left / westward cell |
5. How to find a DIGIPIN
Official tool: Know Your DIGIPIN – Department of Posts.
- Open the official website on a phone or computer.
- Allow browser location access to obtain your device's position, if desired.
- Use the location lookup or input geographical latitude/longitude coordinates.
- Read the generated ten-character code.
- For decoding, enter the DIGIPIN in the reverse conversion facility to retrieve its reference coordinates.
- Verify the displayed position corresponds to the intended physical location before sharing.
5.1 Is registration necessary?
The Department of Posts' supplied FAQ says no login or sign-up is necessary for retrieving a location DIGIPIN.
5.2 Can it work offline?
The published encoding/decoding algorithm can be run offline when installed locally. This does not mean the website itself is available without a working internet connection. Obtaining GPS/GNSS coordinates and loading online map tiles may have their own device and connectivity requirements.
6. PIN Code versus DIGIPIN
| Basis | PIN Code | DIGIPIN |
|---|---|---|
| Full form | Postal Index Number | Digital Postal Index Number |
| Format | 6 numeric digits | 10 alphanumeric symbols |
| Identifies | Postal area / routing context | Small geographic grid cell |
| Based on | Postal area arrangements | Latitude and longitude |
| Purpose | Postal sorting/routing | Precise geographical referencing |
| Coverage | Broad postal area | Approximately 4 m × 4 m cell |
| Introduced | 1972 | 2025 initiative |
| Impact of road rename | Not automatically linked to road name | No change to fixed geographic cell code |
| Identifies individual recipient? | No | No |
6.1 Why both may be necessary
The six-digit PIN Code supports sorting and postal routing. A DIGIPIN helps specify the location of a small area. Neither alone automatically identifies the correct person, flat, entrance or delivery office. The Department of Posts states that DIGIPIN complements, not replaces, existing addressing.
7. Important properties
- Precise grid reference: approx. 4 m × 4 m at level 10.
- Geographically persistent: independent of renaming roads or locality boundaries.
- Privacy-conscious code: the code alone contains geographic location, not name or telephone details; a shared home location may still be sensitive.
- Offline algorithm: locally implemented encoding and decoding need not contact a remote server.
- Directional hierarchy: neighbouring cells and common prefixes reflect spatial subdivision.
- Scalable: suitable as a base for many service applications.
- Infrastructure-independent: a change in the building or road network does not change the cell boundaries.
- Interoperable: common publicly documented reference format supports multiple systems.
DIGIPIN encodes horizontal geographical position, not height, floor number, resident identity or ownership of a property.
8. Applications in postal services
The following are potential and developing integration uses; do not assume all are compulsory or operational in each India Post application.
8.1 Article booking
Support precise location capture in addition to a descriptive address during booking.
8.2 Mail sorting
When combined with routing and postal datasets, geocoded inputs may reduce address ambiguity and facilitate sorting decisions. DIGIPIN alone does not encode all sorting destinations.
8.3 Last-mile delivery
Help delivery personnel identify the relevant building area or geographical destination in streets with unclear addresses.
8.4 Route planning
When integrated with GIS and mapping tools, delivery destinations can support optimized sequencing.
8.5 Rural and remote delivery
Provide a location reference for places with few streets, door numbers or permanent landmarks.
8.6 Address validation
Assist address capture and checking together with conventional details and relevant post office records.
8.7 Disaster response
Help field teams reference precise locations when familiar landmarks are inaccessible or damaged.
9. Applications in other sectors
| Sector | Potential use |
|---|---|
| E-commerce | More accurate destination location information |
| Logistics | Geocoded pickup, service coverage and delivery routing |
| Emergency response | Locate an incident more accurately |
| Disaster management | Reference relief/disaster areas without stable landmarks |
| Banking and insurance | Location attribute that may support address/KYC processes |
| Government welfare | Improve address capture and public service delivery |
| Urban planning | GIS mapping and facility planning |
| Rural development | Referencing places without structured addresses |
| Maritime | Geographical reference for eligible offshore locations in system extent |
Important qualification: a DIGIPIN alone does not verify customer identity, property title or residence.
10. DIGIPIN and DHRUVA
10.1 Full form and purpose
DHRUVA = Digital Hub for Reference & Unique Virtual Address. It is the broader digital address management infrastructure proposed by the Department of Posts in the May 2025 policy document.
10.2 Two proposed layers
Human-friendly labels, descriptive address information and consent-based management
Base geospatial grid location reference
The policy illustrates possible Digital Addresses with a username@domain-like form. This is not the ten-character DIGIPIN format.
10.3 Key actors
| Acronym | Full form | Indicative role |
|---|---|---|
| AIP | Address Information Provider | Maintains address information registry |
| AIU | Address Information User | Uses authorized address details in service delivery |
| AIA | Address Information Agent | Assists users with address and consent management |

11. Differences between DIGIPIN beta and final specification
| Element | Beta | March 2025 final |
|---|---|---|
| Longitude limits | 63.5°–99° E | 63.5°–99.5° E |
| Latitude limits | 1.5°–39° N | 2.5°–38.5° N |
| Character substitutions | G, W, X present | C, F, T substituted |
| Labelling approach | Earlier approach | Uniform grid labelling at all 10 levels |
11.1 Display and storage formats
The March 2025 document shows a spaced demonstration and its annexure inserts hyphens in one programming output. The current GitHub representation guidance specifies a continuous ten-character value for digital storage, transmission and API exchange; optional display grouping does not change the code itself.
12. DIGIPIN GitHub repository and APIs
Official repository: INDIAPOST-gov/digipin.
12.1 What is open source?
Source code can be publicly inspected and used in accordance with its licence. The repository provides the DIGIPIN encoding/decoding implementation and documentation.
12.2 Encoding and decoding
Encoding takes coordinates and returns a ten-character code. Decoding accepts the code and returns the coordinates of its grid cell.
12.3 Developer implementation
The official repository provides code and interface material for integration by programmers. Site developers can add coordinate-based conversion features after implementing or integrating the published algorithms. This teaching page intentionally does not send any location data to a third-party service or simulate live code generation.
13. Frequently asked questions
No. It is an additional geographic reference.
2. Is DIGIPIN unique for every person? No. It represents a geographical cell and several individuals may share it.
3. Will two residents on different floors always have different DIGIPINs?No. Floor height is not encoded; identical latitude/longitude gives the same grid reference.
4. Can a big building cover more than one DIGIPIN?Yes, a large footprint may span several small grid cells.
5. Does a renamed road change DIGIPIN?No. Its code refers to a fixed geographical cell, not a street name.
6. Must I submit Aadhaar to get DIGIPIN?No. Coordinates determine the code; the official lookup FAQ does not require sign-up.
7. Does DIGIPIN verify the ownership of a home? No. Location codes do not establish ownership, identity or residence.
8. Does DIGIPIN work without internet? The local encoding and decoding algorithm can work offline; the online website requires connectivity.
9. Is every generated DIGIPIN accurate to exactly four metres? Not necessarily. Grid resolution differs from device positioning accuracy.
10. Can DIGIPIN assist navigation? It identifies a destination that navigation applications may use; turn-by-turn guidance still requires a navigation system.
11. Can a person book an article using only DIGIPIN?The supplied Department of Posts FAQ says general usage in postal article booking would be announced after departmental integration. Do not assume DIGIPIN-only booking is currently accepted without an applicable official update.
12. Does DIGIPIN contain private personal data? The code alone encodes a geographical cell, not personal details. Associating a home code with a named individual can nonetheless be sensitive.
13. What is the difference between DIGIPIN and GPS?GPS/GNSS supplies geographic coordinates; DIGIPIN encodes the grid corresponding to these coordinates.
14. Can DIGIPIN be decoded?Yes, to the corresponding geographical cell coordinates.
15. Is DIGIPIN designed for maritime regions?Yes, its technical bounding box covers relevant maritime areas.
14. Descriptive examination questions and model answers
Q1. Define DIGIPIN and explain its importance for India Post.
DIGIPIN (Digital Postal Index Number) is a national geocoded location reference developed by the Department of Posts with IIT Hyderabad and NRSC, ISRO. It converts geographical coordinates into a unique ten-character code corresponding to a small location grid. Its purpose is to complement conventional postal addresses with precision and interoperability. It could support accurate address capture, GIS-based service delivery, rural access, location discovery and delivery-route planning. The code itself is not an identity or property record and does not replace the traditional address.
Q2. Explain its grid architecture.
The bounding box extends from 2.5° N to 38.5° N and 63.5° E to 99.5° E, using EPSG:4326. At every level a region is split into sixteen cells in a 4 × 4 pattern. Each of the sixteen cells is labelled with a specified symbol. The selected cell is recursively subdivided ten times; one symbol per level produces a ten-character code, identifying an approximately 4 m × 4 m area.
Q3. State advantages over conventional addressing.
DIGIPIN references geography independently from language, road names, landmarks or administrative changes. This can improve precision, reduce ambiguous location descriptions, support remote locations and assist emergency response, logistics and digital service systems. However, recipient and apartment details are still necessary in many delivery settings.
Q4. Differentiate DIGIPIN from DHRUVA.
DIGIPIN is the foundational geographical coding layer. DHRUVA, or Digital Hub for Reference & Unique Virtual Address, is the proposed broader address-management DPI incorporating a Digital Address layer and consent-based sharing. DIGIPIN represents geographic cells; DHRUVA envisions management of address information through users, providers and interoperable services.
Q5. Describe encoding and decoding with an example.
Encoding starts with coordinates, identifies the containing cell of a geographic bounding box, chooses a symbol and repeats 4 × 4 subdivision across ten levels. Dak Bhawan (28.622788° N, 77.213033° E) has the official example code 39J49LL8T4. Decoding reverses the hierarchy to identify the referenced grid cell and its centre coordinates.
